[ THE STORY ]

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Smart Me is a Namibian public awareness initiative that turns complex social challenges into short, memorable and action-oriented animated stories. Its first programme is a five-episode cybercrime awareness mini-series designed to help young people, families and online communities recognise digital threats, protect personal information, verify suspicious messages and report harmful activity.

The need is immediate. Namibia's digital participation continues to grow: the International Telecommunication Union reports that 64.9% of individuals used the internet and 79.7% owned a mobile phone in 2024. Greater access creates opportunity, but also expands exposure to phishing, impersonation, misinformation, cyberbullying and other online harms. UNICEF Namibia reports that approximately 20,000 children - 9% of internet users aged 12-17 - experienced online child sexual exploitation and abuse in 2021. Across Africa, INTERPOL identifies online scams as the most frequently reported cyber threat and calls for stronger prevention and public awareness.

Kuik Media has already demonstrated the ability to translate institutional messages into accessible animation through work shown for the Development Bank of Namibia, BIPA Namibia and the Office of the Ombudsman. A proof-of-concept Smart Me episode has also been produced around a fake government-bonus scam, ending with the practical message: Stop. Think. Verify.
